From his very early years, Eugène Ysaÿe began to compose everything for his instrument, the violin. He composed eight violin concertos alone, child's play that he later destroyed - with the exception of the Concerto No. 8 later revised and orchestrated by his grandson. As a mature composer, only the six solo sonatas written by Ysaÿe just prior to his death have remained present in the public mind and in performance practice.

The works on this disc capture a sense of Ysaÿe's inherited musical understanding from previous generations of instrument craftsmen as well as his ideas about the future, pushing the musical boundaries of his day.

His atmospheric, astonishing impressionistic works for violin and orchestra find their perfect match in Albrecht Laurent Breuninger, the winner of the Prix Ysaÿe.

This CD spotlights Yossif Ivanov, a young violinist who aged 20, won the Second Prize and Prize of the Public at the Queen Elizabeth Competition (first prize being won by Sergey Khachatryan).

This first recording confirms Ivanov's deep presence and strong personality as a violinist. Here he is accompanied by Daniel Blumenthal, who has often performed with some of the most acclaimed artists in the world.

Ivanov is currently touring many countries in a "rising star tour" set up by the Queen Elizabeth Competition. He will also be performing Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto at the Royal Festival Hall in April 2007 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Marin Alsop.

Over the last few years Philippe Graffin has been on a voyage of discovery researching little-known works for the violin by well-known masters. March of this year saw the release of his particularly well-received disc of rare French works for violin and orchestra (CDA67294), and this month we release a disc of works for violin and piano that also emerged from his investigations. These pieces have been uncovered in private collections and various libraries, including the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

These are fascinating transcriptions by Saint-Saëns, one of the most celebrated pianists of his time, and the equally celebrated violinist Ysaÿe. Having assisted in bringing them to light, Graffin performs them here with his customary virtuosity and grace, accompanied by the equally deft French pianist, Pascal Devoyon, on a disc that will educate, delight and amaze.
