The Yellow River Cantata is based on the 1939 poem sequence 'Yellow River' by Guang Weiran. A vocal work that occupies a leading place in the history of modern Chinese music, the cantata evoked immediate interest and was soon heard throughout China. Although half a century has now passed, it still retains its appeal for a vast Chinese audience.

The Cantata consists of seven movements, each beginning with a recitation accompanied by the orchestra.

The Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most famous performing organisations in China.
