Weingartner's Symphony No. 4 could have justifiably been known as his 'Pastoral' symphony, with its obvious musical references to the springtime, alternating between dark rain clouds and sudden rays of sunlight streaming down onto the meadows. The Serenade for String Orchestra is another gem, again evoking feelings of rolling countryside and bright spring days.

Scenes from Shakespeare's The Tempest are beautifully evoked in Der Sturm, a magical work full of changes in mood as different characters are presented and events pass. This music was composed at the invitation of the Grand Duke of Hesse for the Darmstadt Theater, after which Weingartner went on to produce a three-movement suite summarizing the play, together with an overture, both of which are presented on this recording.

The third of Weingartner's symphonies is the longest and musically most lavish and luxuriant, with a genuine wealth of melodic ideas.

The Third Symphony holds its own secrets of a love affair that began in 1908 between Weingartner and his third wife, Lucille Marcel. "Then things turned to the writing of a new symphony. In astrological mythology its E major key is the sun. The E consists of the initial letters of our first names, F and L. E major from then on became our transcendental key, just as in the heavens Cassiopeia, representing a W, read in its inversion as an M, became our constellation. (F and W stand for Felix Weingartner and L and M for Lucille Marcel) Secret words that only we two know how to read are set to some themes."
