Louis Vierne has suffered, since his death actually at the organ of Notre Dame in 1937, from being 'pigeon-holed' as an organist composer - but this valuable TIMPANI reissue brings together recordings made in the early 1990s of his complete chamber music. Louis Vierne, the great French organist, began his auspicious musical career under the direction of César Franck and Charles-Marie Widor at the Paris Conservatory, where he won first prize for organ playing. In 1892 Vierne became Widor's assistant at St. Sulpice; in 1900 he was appointed organist at the cathedral of Notre Dame, a post he retained until his death, at the keyboard. Vierne was also an accomplished performer and pedagogue, and instructed such musicians as Marcel Dupré and Nadia Boulanger at the Paris Conservatory. His works are technically demanding, becoming increasingly difficult in his later symphonies. The registrations explore the entire language of the immense symphonic organs of Cavaillé-Coll and the six organ symphonies represent the culmination of the French symphonic style

This disc is the product of 5 years of archival research and study. It features material never before recorded and represents the most complete treatment of Vierne's song cycles available today.

Rachel Santesso studied voice at the Conservatorio di Verona in Italy and the Conservatory of Victoria. She made her professional debut as soprano soloist with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra under Peter McCoppin when she was 19, and has since appeared with major orchestras, ensembles and artists at venues and festivals around the world.

She became interested in Louis Vierne while an organ scholar in Canada, and later began looking for his forgotten song repertoire
