Alexander Utendal was a native of Ghent, but served Hapsburg patrons in Vienna and Innsbruck, and his collection of songs was published in Nuremberg. This CD, in RICERCAR's 'I Fiamminghi' series, contains 23 of the 26 songs, and these are all first recordings. The French songs are set to high-quality texts, many by Ronsard, while the German songs are lighter in character, and even 'saucy and lewd'!
