In his mighty organ cycle L'Orgue Mystique, Charles Tournemire (1870-1939) - pupil of Franck and Widor and teacher of Messiaen; used Gregorian plainsong as his compositional basis. In the six years from 1927 to 1932 Tournemire composed 51 masses for the liturgical year (for performance in the Sunday and Holy Day Masses in the Roman Catholic rites), which are divided into the three cycles, Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. Although several organs are used within this series, care has been taken to ensure that the cycle remains as homogeneous as possible.
