This CD is one of a pair of recordings by Ars Nova Copenhagen featuring a Mass by John Taverner and a selection of works by other English composers from the same era. The main work on this CD, Taverner's Western Wind Mass, is a series of brilliant choral variations based on a secular tune; it is fittingly interspersed with a selection of spiritual partsongs from the same period.

Although he is one of England's greatest early composers, relatively little is known about John Taverner's life. He was born in Lincolnshire around 1490, and by 1524 he was one of six lay clerks at Tattershall College in Lincolnshire. In 1526 he became the first choirmaster of Cardinal College, Oxford - founded by Cardinal Wolsey. Taverner's Western Wind Mass is one of three early Tudor masses that use a cantus firmus derived from the song 'Westron Wynde'.

The other two masses on this CD are by John Sheppard and Christopher Tye, possibly composed in the 1540s in homage to the older master.

This CD features the outstanding Danish Choir Ars Nova Copenhagen together with the English conductor Paul Hillier in a rare recording of Taverner's unique work
