Various: Argentine Tangos & Klezmer - Los Tangueros Various: Argentine Tangos & Klezmer - Los Tangueros

Label - VMS

Cat. No. - VMS151

Harking back to the nostalgic charms of the tango as it would have been danced in the “dives” of Buenos Aires, Los Tangueros have unearthed some almost forgotten titles from 1920s Argentina. They have dusted off melodies like El Choclo and Milonga de mis Amores, which were the original inspiration for the work of Piazzolla. The musicians; Gianfranco Grisi on concertina and Walter Abt on guitar; are concerned with exploring the original tango forms, particularly the Milonga, and to create an authentic performing style.

Raúl Giménez presents a panorama of popular twentieth century songs by composers of his native Argentina. These songs have their roots in Argentinian folk-idioms and in the simple lyricism of country life, and most are written 'in popular style'. The fresh, rustic harmonies of Buchardo complement the strongly rhythmic elements reflecting popular dance rhythms which characterize the selections of Guastavino. This reverence for tradition is continued in the songs of Ginastera with their clear references to fast dance rhythms, but it is overlayed by a melodic inventiveness which is essentially modern

This CD brings together examples of the rich and diverse music of South America. It also includes three tracks taken from the distinguished series of recordings of Flamenco music, thereby recognising the historical link between Spain and Latin America established initially by Columbus' discovery of South America. Although the conquistadors imposed their own culture on the natives of the New World they could not obliterate completely the traditions of the Indians. As well as the Hispanic influence on the music of South America there is also the African element brought about as a result of the slave trade. The African contribution is primarily to be found in the sycopated rhythms and is especially concentrated in Brazil and the Caribbean
