On most recordings the folk songs of Central France are sung by old voices: those of the people who possessed that age-old tradition which set music at the heart of everyday life. Usually we can only dream of hearing how they were in their prime and sought after to perform at weddings and banquets.

Bruno Bonhoure has both the vocal qualities and tradition to enable listeners who seek that type of authenticity. This young tenor was born in a part of Cantal, Le Carladès, isolated from the main communication routes. He comes from a family that is clearly very attached to its musical traditions.

One only has to observe how carefully Marguerite Bonhoure listens to her son as he sings and offers him advice on pronunciation or expression. At thirty-five, Bruno Bonhoure has inherited the oral tradition of his elders who were immortalised on ethno-musicological recordings. He, and the musicians of La Camera delle Lacrime, proposes interpretations in which the different fibres coexist, retain their identity, while forming a harmonious fabric. Another form of authenticity is achieved through the alternation of solo vocal pieces and encounters with the djembé, mandore and accordion.

It was beautifully recorded by Fr Damian Webb in 1962 when the villages he visited had very little contact with the wider world.
