In the post-Beethoven era Onslow was regarded as one of the leading composers of chamber music. Above all his seventy string quartets and quintets laid the foundation of his fame as an extraordinarily capable musician whose works are rich in detail and composed with sophistication.

For the Mandelring Quartet Onslow's music is a cause worth championing; in addition to his string quartets, (nine of which have already been released on CPO) the ensemble has now recorded his suspenseful String Quartet op. 44 of 1832 together with the double bassist Wolfgang Güttler.

It is featured here with the Nonet Op. 77, a work in which Onslow realizes the basic ideal of classical balance: each instrument does not shine primarily by and for itself alone, but the individual motifs are led from instrument to instrument - and interpreted here by one of the world's leading chamber ensembles, the Ma'alot Quintet.

Born in France but English by descent (he was the son of an English nobleman MP), Onslow had to battle against several factors in order to get his symphonies recognised. Although owing themselves in style as much to Cherubini as to Beethoven, the omnipotence of Beethoven's symphonies made them a natural comparison for any symphonic composer at the time, and historically many works have therefore been overlooked. The symphonies faced the added difficulty of being composed in Paris between 1829 and 1846, a time when opera dominated the Parisian scene. However, aided by Berlioz's works, Onslow's symphonies contributed towards changing the French musical scene to make instrumental music the fashion once again. The French press marked their acceptance of this new form with their references to Onslow as "the French Beethoven" - a comparison strengthened by Onslow's partial deafness

Including String Quintets op.38 & 67

In a letter of 1843 Onslow wrote “…I’m composing a special quintet for the four-stringed double bass.” He was making reference to his op.67 Quintet, a work dedicated to bassist Achille Gouffe. In this work he used a bass instead of a second cello. In doing so he transcended the usual boundaries of earlier chamber music conventions and lent the string quintet an orchestral dimension, which is ably demonstrated here by the Momento Musicale Quintet.
