There’s something remarkable about the secular works of Jacob Obrecht (1457/8-1505) Like most of the composers of the Netherlandic School, he wrote a number of secular works alongside his principal, religious works. Most of these composers wrote primarily French chansons, but they also wrote songs in Dutch. Since these texts have long been lost, the verses here have been reconstructed by Gerrit Komrij. His words fit perfectly the world of thoughts and ideas of the Rhetoricians, the same world as that of Hieronymous Bosch and Pieter Brueghel. These are real poems in modern Dutch; comical or touching, often with an unexpected turn near the end
