The music of Nishimura seems to flow from another world, one which is mysterious and unexplainable. He has a keen interest in the people and music of Asia, though he does not use traditional Japanese instruments or Asian folk instruments, as he prefers the sound of modern instruments. His works have won several international prizes and are often performed by many of the world’s finest exponents of contemporary music.

Akira Nishimura was born in 1953 in Osaka. He studied composition and musical theory at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. During this time he also studied Asiatic traditional music, religion, aesthetics and cosmology, all of which have had a lasting influence on his music to the present day. He has won several prizes including the Grand Prix for composition at the Queen Elizabeth International Music Competition in Brussels, the Luigi Dallapiccola Composition Award in Milano and several in Japan. Ensembles such as the Arditti String Quartet & the Kronos Quartet have performed his works. Many contemporary music festivals - Vienna, Strasbourg, Brisbane, Oslo, Rouen… - have featured his works. Nishimura belongs with the most important contemporary composers today
