BIS presents a disc of organ works by Ludvig Nielsen, an organist who was closely associated for more than 40 years with one of Norway's most impressive organs and church buildings - the 1930 Steinmeyer organ in the Cathedral of Trondheim (Nidarosdomen). This Cathedral started as a small wooden chapel in 1030 A.D. and grew into a grand Gothic cathedral in the 14th century.

Determined in his dedication to the church and the instrument, Nielsen composed a great number of works for organ, almost all of them sacred. They range from brief chorales and settings of psalms to large-scale fantasies on religious subjects and themes. The style is always polyphonic and the works are frequently based on mediæval melodies as well as Norwegian folk tunes - one example on the present disc being the Olsok fantasy, Op. 4, which features music composed in the 12th century and used at Nidarosdomen in honour of St. Olav, the patron saint of Norway.

In a labour of love, Bjørn Kåre Moe, once a student of Ludvig Nielsen and one of Norway's most respected organists, has devised the programme on this disc and performs, with soprano Mona Julsrud, the music on the instrument it was once composed at.
