This is La Reverdie’s account of the Medieval world of love, its mysticism and eroticism as evinced in the famous van Eyck portrait of a marriage, which illustrates the cover full of allegory and secrets. So is the music that features on this disc by La Reverdie, a group that was Inspired by Romance lyrics (reverdies) celebrating the return of Spring. La Reverdie was founded in 1986 by two pairs of sisters, all singers and instrumentalists, with the intent of exploring the musical repertoire of Europe from the High Middle Ages to the end of the 14th century.

This disc was the Winner of the Diapason D’Or D’Annee in 1993 and remains a best seller in France.

In the wake of the troubadours the trouvères exercised their art from the 1160s. At the end of the thirteenth century the last trouvères were for the most part clerics, writing poems dedicated to the Virgin Mary, or polyphonic chansons. They covered an extensive geographical area, which encompassed the whole of northern France and the southern part of modern Belgium. The poets expressed their talents in a wide range of poetic forms, either imitating those used by the troubadours, or inventing new ones, chansons d'amour, de croisade [crusade], de femmes, de toile [spinning and weaving], d'aube [dawn parting], sottes-chansons [parodic], jeux-partis [debate], reverdies [Spring and love]. The trouvère chanson is the artistic expression of feudalism, with courtly love as its principal subject. This programme presents some of the jewels of the canon, using interpretative techniques closest to those of the trouvères themselves either a cappella or accompanied by a single instrument.

A collection of 25 madrigals from 23 different composers, from the famous to the obscure, make up this Elizabethan curiosity, published in 1601 by Thomas Morley.A musical dedication to Queen Elizabeth 1, The Triumphs of Oriana displays the talents of English songwriters, long-overshadowed by their European counterparts, conjuring up an image of an idealised and mythical England of old.

Started in 1968 by six Choral Scholars from King's College Cambridge, the King's Singers quickly became a prominent musical force in the UK.The rest of the world soon followed so that today the group's engagements are spread throughout the four corners of the globe. Since their debut concert the King's Singers have commissioned works from many well-known composers including Krystof Penderecki, Luciano Berio, Peter Maxwell Davies, Ned Rorem and Gyorgy Ligeti.

This branch of their repertoire now comprises well over 200 pieces. But above all it is their simple enjoyment of what they do that has captured the imagination of the public all over the world and kept the King's Singers at the top of their game for three and a half decades.
