The “Cantigas de Santa María” or Cantigas of Our Lady, were written in Gallaic-Portuguese, the lyrical language of the Court of Old Castile. The Cantigas of Our Lady were written to be sung and interpreted by Court Minstrels. This was courtly music, appropriate as well to be interpreted in the temples and even, on occasion, to be danced to. Alfonso X “Emperor of Culture” had a strong relationship with the city of Jerez. The great collection of miracles contained in the Songbook began to concentrate on stories closer to the national core, since the common European collections had been exhausted. Jerez appears twelve times in the Cantigas.

Medieval composers knew how “pleasant” certain kinds of pain could be: in matters of love and fate, pain was not only unavoidable but a source of inspiration. Since poetry was not read but performed in the Middle Ages, music was composed in order to give both secular and sacred texts a public voice, and to give colour and shape to a particular style of poetry. On 26 November 1504, Isabel the Catholic died in Medina del Campo at the age of fifty-three. Alfonso X el Sabio, King of Castile and Leon from 1252 to 1284, was an ambitious man who enjoyed conquest. At the same time he was one of the most enlightened rulers of his time, practised poetry, music, astronomy and the law. Alfonso was also a troubadour. His major achievement was the Cantigas de Santa Maria, a work possibly influenced by Les Miracles de Nostre-Dame by the Frenchman Gautier de Coinci (1177-1236). The Cantigas, numbering 472 in all and relating miracles accomplished by the Virgin Mary, have survived in four manuscripts, precious documents, from the textual, iconographical and musical points of view. Alfonso was not the author of all the pieces in the collection, but they were written under his supervision during his lifetime

Soprano Emily Van Evera is an uncommonly versatile singer. Her luminous voice blends sense with sensuousness, and can sound at once tender and thrillingly beautiful. Oswald von Wolkenstein, the Monk of Salzburg, Neidhard von Reuental and Tannhäuser mark the end of an era. Classical Minnesang, with its noble and courtly forms and manners was now caricatured, spoiled, made fun of and transposed from the courtly into the peasant environment. There is hardly any effort to veil the erotic references and in some cases the lyrics are full of literary wit of almost Dadaist character. While classical Minnesang totally subordinated the melody to the lyrics, in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the music took on ever greater significance. The second (and last) part of the Minnesang Anthology (like the first, CHR 77242 "Minnesang - The Golden Age") has been compiled by the renowned medievalist and philologist Volker Mertens from recordings in the Christophorus archives and he has provided it with a comprehensive commentary

Since the ninth century the apostle St James has been the object of great faith and fervour in the Western Christian world. Even today people, with a wide diversity of motivations, arrive from all over Europe to walk the Camino de Santiago, the Way of St James, leading to Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. Yet the vocal music that once served as a support in the cult of St James is still little known, even to those involved with the pilgrimage, and it is therefore rarely performed today. Every year, the Elche Festival or Mystery Play is celebrated by the townspeople of Elche (in the region of Valencia, South-Eastern Spain) to mark the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The performance in two acts takes place over two days and is remarkable in that its origin goes back to medieval times. It is staged, sung and experienced within the walls of the Basilica of Santa Maria de Elche on 14th and 15th of August. Of major artistic and historical importance, the Mystery re-enacts the death, assumption and crowning of the Virgin Mary. It is the only work of its kind that has been performed virtually without interruption since the Middle Ages until the present day. It is the main festival of the city of Elche and a key work of European religious theatre of the Middle Ages. In 1931, the Spanish State declared the Festival of Elche a national monument and in 2001 it was included in UNESCO's list of the "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity".

The theme of Distant Love was a major focus for the Provencal Troubador poets of the late twelfth century. It revolved around an idealised, mostly nameless, and frequently unattainable Lady, to whom a poet - musician addressed highly accomplished verses of intense longing. It also came to be expressed through a widespread burgeoning of the adoration of the Virgin Mary, and it has been argued that the Lady of the courtly lover was so close in form and inspiration to the Mother of Christ as to be indistinguishable from her. This disc attempts to explore this juxtaposition of human longing and religious adoration in a context of the earthy music of the dance.
