Over forty years separate the first composition on this recording from the last. On the Sonata a tre Malipiero wrote that the sound of the solo violin or cello shouldn't blend with the piano, which means the two instruments raise their voices only to contradict each other. The same happens if there are three instruments, as is the case in the third movement when the sonata actually becomes 'a tre' The Sonatina for cello and piano is dated 1942 and Malipiero places it in the wake of the Sonata a tre, simply adding that "it is slimmer and apparently more spontaneous". Dialoghi (Dialogues) is an ambivalent title, indicating as much the emotional nature of these inner conversations with the shadows of the past, as the concerto-like musical form of these works. Two pianos and occasionally the human voice vie with each other in animated conversation, a sort of anarchic coming together of equals in the composer's unstoppable imagination -that freedom of discourse being one of the principal features of Malipiero's art

Gian Francesco Malipiero "led an interesting double life of a kind that is now unthinkable; as a musicologist who edited the complete works of Monteverdi for the first time, and as a composer. The New Grove Dictionary even describes him as 'the most original and inventive Italian composer of his generation'...Malipiero was overwhelmed by the music of Stravinsky (particularly the Rite), and his own work mixes archaic references and 20th-century idioms in an inventive and appealing way. The two sets of Invezioni and the Symphonic Fragments from Il finto Arlecchino consist of sequences of very short movements, most a couple of minutes long, and are a testament to Malipiero's deep involvement with the music of the Italian Baroque. The faster movements are very linear, tautly constructed and economically worked out; the slower ones are more lyrical and at times even pastoral. It is the strings, beautifully disciplined and resonant, that carry the day in both the scores and their realization, and there is also some fine solo violin playing in the Sette invenzioni."- Gramophone (Iain Fenlon) September 2001

"Gallen's playing is impressive and his interpretations sure-footed, evidence of a compelling new musical voice on the guitar scene."- American Record Guide(Steven Rings) July/August 2001
