Evgeni Argyshev is described as the first Russian Counter Tenor. As a professional singer he sang both as a counter tenor and a baritone, creating his 'top' by use of falsetto. We may be more used to a cleaner and more athletic sound in our counter tenors today, but the part played by Argyshev in Russia to bring the voice to a wider audience is equal to that played by Alfred Deller in Europe.
