Although he composed theatrical works and compositions for orchestra, Albeniz is most popular for his programmatic piano suites, which recreate the songs and dance folklore of Spain. The piano suite Iberia, a large work consisting of twelve pieces in four volumes, is a real masterpiece. It is, in effect, a musical portrait of Spain represented through songs and dances. However, Albeniz rarely quoted folklore material, preferring to create original themes based on his deep knowledge and special feeling for the material.
