The Prophetiae Sibyllarum (Sibylline Prophecies) and the Novem Lectiones Sacrae ex libris Hiob (Nine Sacred Readings from the Prophet Job) by Orlande de Lassus are found together in the same manuscript, in the Austrian National Library, and are also presented together here. The Prophetiae Sibyllarum are among the composer's most enigmatic works, and they are well represented in the catalogue. However this is the first ever recording of his second version of the Lectiones Sacrae ex libris Hiob (c1582) - one of the most extraordinary motet cycles of the musician's maturity. The cycle is esoteric and sophisticated, subtle yet refined.

During the last thirty years of his life, Orlande de Lassus (1532-1594) was the most celebrated composer in Europe. From the time that he took up the duties of maestro di cappella in the court of the Dukes of Bavaria at Munich, he began to be called 'prince of musicians' and 'the divine Orlande'. In this he outstripped the other musical giants of the day, Palestrina, Victoria, and Byrd. The pieces selected for this recording represent Lassus's treatment of the theme of death during this mature period. The first group considers the death of Christ; the second, the death of the Christian, and include the three readings from Lamentations assigned to Maundy Thursday in his five-voice version, published in 1585 as well as his Requiem Mass for four voices published in 1578.

When his Penitential Psalms were published in Munich in 1584, twenty five years after their composition, Orlande de Lassus was the most famous composer in Europe, with publishers quarrelling among themselves to get first call on his new works. This cycle of polyphonic Penitential Psalms is a quite extraordinary work. The texts themselves make a singular collection, namely seven of the 150 Old Testament psalms which are linked by the common theme of penitence and contrition. These were most often sung as part of the Church liturgy or recited in personal devotions during Lent, as the faithful prepared themselves in penitence and fasting to commemorate the Passion, death and resurrection of Christ.

The Penitential Psalms have become an ideal model for countless polyphonists, their phenomenal success being commensurate with the diversity (and quality) of Lassus' music.

Philippe Herreweghe returns to the Rennaissance and Lassus which he has already served through two widely acclaimed recordings.
