Salvatore Lanzetti is one of a number of instrumentalist-composers who plied their trade in Baroque Italy. Completely ignored before 1980, Lanzetti was famed during his life for his brilliant cello playing. In his compositions, the technique of cello playing is developed to surprising levels for the time. Double chords and new bowings are used, exemplified in the Sonata op.1, a work in which all the technical resources of the instrument are used. These works for the cello are a fine addition to the cello repertory and are offered here in superb interpretations by Alix Verzier.
