Born in Milan in 1911, Nino Rota is best known for his film music. His musical language is romantic and above all melodic. His harmonies are apparently simple but show the influence of the young Stravinsky. His handling of instrumental colouring and its combination with the piano is the most striking feature of Rota’s E minor concerto. The beauty of the images conveyed by the sounds reveal a merging of strong nostalgia, optimism and humour. Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto has not achieved the popularity of his Violin Concerto. It does however possess the same musical personality, combining pure folklore, a fine orchestral technique and melodic beauty.
