Robert Schumann, who had the highest esteem for Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda and followed his development with attention, was of the mind that his symphonies were no "Beethovian diadems" but more on the order of "white, transparent pearls that will endure the longest among his works."

The Prague native Kalliwoda served as director of the Donaueschingen court orchestra for more than twenty years. Kalliwoda wrote his seven symphonies during this fulfilled, happy period of his life, and they show him as a master of the genre.

Christoph Spering's congenial interpretation of Symphony No. 5 and this World Première Recording of Symphony No. 7 with Das Neue Orchester can only be described as breathtaking.

Johann Wenzeslaus Kalliwoda is one of many composers whose works, long undervalued and rarely performed, have been revived in modern times thanks to recordings such as those of the Stuttgart Hofkapelle under its conductor Frieder Bernius.

The Bohemian-born Kalliwoda was no innovator but nor was he intimidated by the all-powerful shadow of Beethoven when venturing into the field of the symphony. From the beginning of his Fifth Symphony in B minor, with its gradual entry of the instruments building to a flowing cantilena and contrasting with fanfares in the horns and trumpets, a style of writing as original as it is compelling is revealed. Kalliwoda's art emerges in the later movements, even recalling Berlioz, while at the same time refuting the claim that during the quarter of a century that Kalliwoda spent, as Kapellmeister to the house of Fürstenberg in Donaueschingen, he slowly drifted away from mainstream European music. His Sixth Symphony is in F major and abounds with elaborate transitions and a sophisticated use of variations. In this meticulously articulated and phrased performance, the work emerges as Kalliwoda's tribute to Beethoven, Schubert and Spohr rather than as a forward-looking piece in the Schumannesque tradition, for all that Schumann repeatedly expressed the greatest respect for its composer.

Including Symphony No.3 Op.32; Overture No.12 Op.145; Introduction & Rondo for Horn and Orchestra Op.51; Introduction & Variations for Clarinet and Orchestra Op.128

Kalliwoda’s Bohemian homeland is evident throughout his music. The minuet of the Symphony No.3 seems to have been influenced by the Slavic dances of Bohemia, and the last movement clearly displays Eastern European harmonic colour. Kalliwoda’s symphonic palette exhibits wonderful colours, lyrically vivid melodies, storm & stress dramaticism and splendid orchestral developments of choral quality.
