Jouni Kaipainen began writing concertos in the 1990s and now has written for almost all orchestral instruments. The Horn Concerto Op. 61 (2000-2001) and the Cello Concerto No. 1 Op. 65 (2002) were both written for specific soloists. Horn player Esa Tapani succeeded in securing a commission and a premiere in Oulu in 2001. It is in the traditional three movements: the first relatively quick and extensive, the second slow and melodic, and the third brief, brisk and flamboyant.

Cellist Marko Ylönen pursued Kaipainen until he got exactly what he wanted. Ylönen won the New York Concert Artists Guild competition in 1996 and was given the opportunity to commission a new work with the Guild footing the bill. Since this arrangement called for a work smaller than a concerto, Ylönen and Kaipainen persuaded the Finnish Broadcasting Company to join in. Ultimately, Cello Concerto No. 1 was completed in 2002 as a now fashionable joint commission. Jouni Kaipainen has progressed from the spiky Modernism of the 1980s to a clearer, harmonically and sonorously softer language. His musical roots are in a brand of Expressionism going back to Alban Berg via Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Pierre Boulez and Luciano Berio
