The Italian opera composer Niccolo Jommelli, worked variously in Vienna, Rome, Stuttgart, and Naples, successfully fusing German, French and Italian elements in his operas. Armida abbandonata (1770) is one of his late operas and was rejected by the public as 'too learned and too German'. He was a pioneer in modifying the singer-dominated Italian style; he omitted items superfluous to the drama and added ensembles and more choruses. In his operas he introduced accompanied recitative and anticipated many of the reforms of Gluck
