Another Jolivet release, this time of brand-new recordings made last year by the wind band of the Parisian Police, to mark the centenary of the composer's birth. Only the jazzy second Trumpet Concerto (championed by the legendary Maurice André) is otherwise available on disc, though the other works are both substantial and enjoyable, and include a superb transcription by Désiré Dondeyne of 'Suite Transocéane', another jazz-influenced work originally written for the Louisville Symphony Orchestra.

Released to mark the centenary of André Jolivet's birth, this generous double album in ACCORD's 'French Composers' series gives an excellent sampling of his musical styles. The performances are mostly by close friends of Jolivet, often recorded in his presence or under his direction. Many of the recordings are the only ones available, and/or have not previously been released on CD - especially noteworthy is Jean-Pierre Rampal performing 'Incantations'.

Maguelone have noticed the centenary of André Jolivet's birth looming in 2005, and this "Volume 1" is presumably the beginning of a complete cycle of the composer's piano works, to celebrate the anniversary. Pascal Gallet is a persuasive advocate, of both the short 'character' pieces and the more ambitious works such as 'Mana', which was evidently much admired by Messiaen, whose appreciative note appears in the booklet
