This Oratorio, inspired by the book of Ecclesiastes was composed by Lee Johnson to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Georgia's La Grange College, where the composer teaches. Animated by the terse but poignant dualities for which Ecclesiastes is famous (a time to laugh, a time to weep; a time for war, a time for peace), Johnson's work is a uniquely American affair with a libretto culled from disparate secular sources such as JFK's "Race to the Moon" speech, Robert Oppenheimer's response to the explosion of the first atomic bomb to General Bradley's Armistice Day Address of 1948. Each of the 13 texts is keyed to one of the different "life tasks" mentioned in a biblical source. They enter a musical world in lushly scored interludes that look to Copland, Barber & Bernstein.
