The album is released to tie in with a series of performances of these pieces, the Brodsky Quartet will be performing them almost every night for 2 weeks in July as part of a production of a new play by Brian Friel. The play is based on the story of Janácek's life whilst he was writing the 2nd Quartet, and his infatuation with the young lady who was the recipient of his love letters

Ø The Smetana Quartet was the greatest of a legendary line of Czech string ensembles. The quartet was formed on 6th November 1945 and made its debut in Prague playing Smetana's E minor quartet "From My Life", a work they would repeat thousands of times. The Smetana Quartet was unique in terms of performance - instead of using music stands, they learnt their repertoire by heart which allowed them to get inside the music and play closer together as one. They first started to tour in 1950 by going to Poland and made their London debut on the 30th October 1955. From then on they appeared in Britain every year playing repertoire by all the major Czech composers, as well as Beethoven, Mozart and even Bax, Britten and Elgar
