Charles Ives left his extraordinary 'Universe Symphony' unfinished, after working at it over 40 years - so it's no surprise that Larry Austin took another 20 years to produce his 'performing edition', here recorded live at the 1998 German première, with Austin himself one of the 5 conductors required!

C Ives: Complete Recordings Of Charles Ives At The Piano - Charles Ives, piano C Ives: Complete Recordings Of Charles Ives At The Piano - Charles Ives, piano

Label - New World Records

Cat. No. - 806422

The invention of sound-recording devices late in the nineteenth century made possible the preservation of definitive performances played or led by some important composers of the first decades of the twentieth century. Elgar, Rachmaninoff, Richard Strauss, and Stravinsky, among others, left a significant legacy of recordings of their own works.

Charles Ives, however, did not approach recording in order to leave a legacy. At least at first, he simply wanted an opportunity to listen to some of his music with advantageous detachment (and possibly to shortcut supplying to Henry Cowell and others variants of his music). With virtually no performances of his important music occurring during the first two decades of the century, Ives certainly had a backlog of curiosity about the sound of his own compositional efforts, and the need to judge them as such.

"This is a most desirable disc. Even more than his orchestral works or songs, the piano works of Charles Ives demonstrate the extraordinary and compelling originality of a composer who was truly ahead of his time. For instance, not allowing convention or practicality to constrict his creativity in the Piano Sonata No. 2 (Concord Mass., 1840-1860), Ives includes a part of flute and a couple of bars for viola as well as large clusters to be played by a board. Such an approach seems more akin to experimental works of the Sixties rather than a piece completed in 1912.

Although not a complete survey, these two discs contain just about all of Ives's best-known and most significant works for piano. Philip Mead has a long association with this music and these are clearly settled and considered interpretations. Not that he is to be found wanting for any sense of spontaneity, his account of Study No. 21, 'Some South-Paw Pitching!' typifying a wonderful ebullience. The production, using a small piano and deliberately cultivating an 'older' sound, is typical of the imaginative approach of both Mead and Metier. Competition in this repertoire is astonishingly scant, but even with a packed field, Mead would be hard to beat." - BBC Music Magazine ***** Recording

Charles Ives’s work as a pioneering polytonalist is perhaps better remembered today than his song output, but throughout his long composing life his most personal musical expressions are to be found in what may best be called the genre of the ‘art song’. These range from traditional ‘lieder’ (setting such familiar poets as Heinrich Heine and Nikolaus Lenau), through English-language ‘songs of the period’ (Kipling, Keats, Bulwer-Lytton), to pioneering ‘pop songs in the modern idiom’, often to texts of Ives’s own devising. All show a degree of craftsmanship which makes one wonder why many of these songs are not better known.

Ives admitted to a deep mistrust of singers – their insistence on ‘interpreting’ any given score frequently, he felt, betrayed its composer’s intentions: not so with Gerald Finley and Julius Drake. These peformances perfectly encapsulate a lost world, transporting the listener back to a world where a ‘sentimental ballad’ could happily share the stage with a pastiche on the ‘Battle Cry for Freedom’

The works on The Unknown Ives, Vol 2 include some of his best and most searching experiments: fragments, personal explorations, cerebral excursions and works of unabashed amusement. What emerges from their juxtaposition is a sense of canon. The spectrum of pieces, from adolescence to maturity, simple to complex, illustrates the boundaries of the complete oeuvre and describe a broad musical profile of Ives the complete musician
