This major new recording presents, for the first time, the original three movement version of Delius’s piano concerto. Until now we have always heard the radical revision, made with the ‘help’ of pianist Theodor Szántó; many will find this original version, which contains a complete movement of previously unheard material, more convincingly Delian.

Also on this disc are John Ireland’s two works for piano and orchestra, the Piano Concerto of 1930 and the Legend.

The release boasts distinguished forces: the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, on top form for this recording, are well matched by soloists Paula Bott,Teresa Shaw, James Oxley and Bryn Terfel, who is featured here in one of his earliest recordings. Although Ireland wrote a number of songs and his piano music dominated the repertoire of British music teaching for many years, there are only a dozen or so works for orchestra.This programme thus gives a strong impression of his orchestral style.
