The Lamentationes Hieremiae, together with the Responsoria Hebdomadae sanctae, represent an extremely important part of the musical production of the Veronese composer. While in the works of Palestrina musical expression is manifested as the search for complete balance between form and content, in those of Ingegneri, on the other hand, the composer tends toward a more dramatic and contrasting vision of the polyphonic discourse, whereby the sonorous illustration of the word employs convincing declination and appropriate stylistic rhetoric in an aesthetic prospective clearly marked by mannerism. But if Ingegneri's style at times evokes that of Palestrina, especially for a certain evenness in his contrapuntal writing, his unmistakably colorful vein, revealing Venetian influences, and his marked sense of chromaticism and expressive voice-leading frees him from any "Roman" serfdom
