A winner of the Prix de Rome at the Paris Conservatoire, Ibert was for a number of years director of the French Academy in Rome. Versatile and prolific, he wrote operas, ballets and music for the theatre, cinema and radio, in addition to vocal and instrumental works, all equally beautifully crafted, with particularly idiomatic handling of wind instruments.

The centrepiece of this outstanding disc is the concert suite from the film score to Macbeth, which Ibert composed in 1948 in Rome. This innovative score includes such features as a breathing choir in the witches' scenes, set against eerie parts for piano, harp, celesta and percussion with string harmonics. The orchestration calls for piano, celesta, vibraphone, harp and a large percussion battery, including Millboard-bells, tabor and Chinese gongs.

Ibert's piano music is a bit reminiscent of Poulenc's but more straightforward. These tiny Pictures, Stories, Encounters, and sundry musical images - some 36 of them before this generous program has run its course - enchant even if they don't cut very deeply. The Romance offers Schumannesque Lyricism; the 'Abandoned Palace' and ' The Wind Over The Ruins' have spooky Gothic atmosphere; the brilliant 'Cabman's Dance' sprints off the keyboard and out of sight; the children's pieces evoke innocence and wonder in the mode of Ravel's Mother Goose.
