Michael Haydn, younger brother to the more famous Joseph, enjoyed a close relationship with Mozart. In the year following the latter’s death, he wrote a requiem, and though it can not be ascertained for whom this mass was intended, there is some evidence that Haydn may have written his music in memory of Mozart.

It was musical providence that brought together Joseph Haydn and Anton Weidinger in 1796. Weidinger's major developments for the trumpet - presented in 1798 after seven years of work - were celebrated in Joseph Haydn's Concerto in E flat major. A new interpretation of this work forms the centre of this new recording of the trumpet concertos of Joseph and Michael Haydn
