Danish composer Emil Hartmann began composing even before he could talk properly, although his real debut was not until the year 1859. He experienced great success when touring Europe to conduct performances of his own works, but in his native Denmark was largely overshadowed by his own father, the famous J.P.E. Hartmann. Hartmann the younger was primarily a church musician, but he had great interest in stage music and composed ballet scores, operas and singspiel. For the concert halls, he composed both choral works and symphonies as well as chamber music and piano works.

A number of talented Danish soloists perform on this recording alongside the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra with Hannu Lintu, who has become particularly well known for his contributions to contemporary music, premiering works by among others Per Nørgård, Marc Anthony Turnage, Jouni Kaipainen and Kaija Saariaho
