Little performed and undervalued until relatively recently, the music of Francesco Guerrero has now begun, once more, to be valued as it should. His range of expression is easily as great as that of Victoria and his profundity matches that of Morales, his teacher at Seville Cathedral. It is perhaps in his motets that Guerrero displays his gifts most fully.

Known for his Latin liturgical compositions, Francisco Guerrero was one of the three great Spanish priest-composers of the 16th century. Widely published and copied during his lifetime, he was also honoured throughout Spain. This recording is directed by Michael Noone, who is a expert on the music and interpretation of Guerrero and these pieces are performed on period instruments.

Francisco Guerrero (1528-1599) along with de Morales and de Victoria, formed the trinity of polyphonic composers during Spain’s Golden Age. Guerrero is the least known of the three and consequently the most underrated, even though he was the most admired Spanish musician of the second half of the 16th century. Only recently have we seen a revival of interest in his music. Guerrero composed his villanescas at different periods of his life. Those having an originally profane text were conceived in his youth, but after visiting the Holy Land in 1588, the sixty year old composer re-tailored their literary content into poetry more apt for spiritual realms!

The compositions on this CD date from Guerrero's early works (until ca. 1550). He put music to the evocative madrigal "Decidme, fuente clara". In this piece of music he shows off his technical skills, combining rhythmic homophony, partition of voices and counterpoint into sections in which he wants to express activity, vitality or movement. Another madrigal, which has lyrics of the magnificent sonnet by Garcilaso de la Vega is "En tanto que de rosa y açuçena". It is inspired on the "locus classicus" and its message evokes the Horatian 'carpe diem' philosophy. Guerrero is probably the best Spanish madrigal writer, for he succeeded in conveying the meaning of the words in his music.

The importance of Seville in the sixteenth century goes far beyond the Spanish borders. Seville became a cosmopolitan city, the European capital of commerce from which the route starts that connects the East and the West through the Atlantic Ocean. It became the gate and harbour of America and one of the most eminent cultural and artistic centres of Spain. The music of the so-called polyphonists of the Andalusian School was highly regarded at that time. Ensemble La Trulla de Bozes was founded in 1998 to explore and perform the renaissance and early baroque choral repertoire. The vocal ensemble is usually accompanied by soft period instruments, such as viola da gamba, lute, harp and organ and changes the number of singers according to the demands of the scores. Whatever the line-up of the group, La Trulla de Bozes always takes the latest musicological developments into account
