SACD Hybrid Recording

Including Chinese Rhapsody; Wu for Piano and Orchestra; Six Pentatonic Tunes for Orchestra

Ge Gan-Ru was born in Shanghai, but has lived in the USA since 1983, and sets out to achieve a true blend of Chinese and Western art music in his work.

Recorded in 5.0 SACD surround sound and featuring a Western symphony orchestra accented by Chinese percussion, both Chinese Rhapsody (described as "an enlivening blast of fresh air" in The New York Times) and Wu (seen to carry "the unmistakable excitement of discovering forbidden but nourishing fruit" by a critic in The Independent) are perfect introductions to Ge's unique compositional fusion. Six Pentatonic Tunes was completed in 2003. Here the orchestra does not include any Chinese instruments, but the Asian character makes itself felt in the basic material in the work, derived from original Chinese folk tunes from various regions, all based around the pentatonic scale.

The much-acclaimed Royal Scottish National Orchestra under José Serebrier delivers strinkingly beautiful and listenable performances of these works. The soloist on Wu is celebrated pianist Margaret Leng Tan, a long-time collaborator of the composer.
