The youngest member of the Neruda family Quartet (whose performances were highly praised throughout Europe) was the cellist Franz Xaver Neruda, and after many stations he culminated his career as a highly regarded personality in Copenhagen's music world.

Neruda became the conductor of the Danish capital's music society while also directing a cello class at the conservatory. He promoted the young Carl Nielsen with all his strength and contributed to the growth and flourishing of Danish music life. Neruda must have been an excellent cellist, as is shown by the five concertos that he wrote for his own performance.

The young cellist Beate Altenburg has prepared the material from the original manuscripts and restored these almost forgotten treasures to the public domain. This is her first appearance with CPO.
