As we celebrate the 500th anniversary of Tallis' birth, a problem that many choirs and choral directors will be tackling is what to do with forty singers once they have been organised. Conductor Simon Halsey commissioned Antony Pitts to write a piece designed as companion for Thomas Tallis' 40-part masterwork, Spem in alium. Between these two chronological extremes, are other similarly emblematic works of the seventeenth (Purcell), eighteenth (Bach) and twentieth centuries (Kodály, Harvey, Sandström), all displaying the vocal mastery of the professional Rundfunkchor Berlin. Recorded in glorious surround sound, one hears the alto and bass voices at rear left and right and sopranos and tenors at front left and right; thus the listener is in a position similar to the conductor's. In the Tallis Spem in alium and Pitts XL the choir is disposed in a circle. For the Tallis, choirs 1-4 are arranged front left to right and choirs 5-8 rear right to left.

Pitts chose for his work a layout going from choir 1 front right to choir 8 rear left. There are fascinating diagrams illustrating the various choir formations in the accompanying booklet.

The Bach, Bach arr. Schnebel [75 this year] and Nystedt pieces are all linked and the clever programming also marries the chant Veni creator spiritus with Jonathan Harvey's Come Holy Ghost. The title XL, refers to the text (Psalm 40), 'extra-large' and, of course, 'excel'

Paul Hillier enjoys a busy career as conductor, singer, teacher, editor, musicologist and writer. He is considered one of the world's foremost choral conductors. Hillier is Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, founder and director of Theatre of Voices and Chief Conductor of Ars Nova Copenhagen. He began his career in the choir of St. Paul's Cathedral in London and later became a member of the Chapel Royal. For many years, Hillier devoted his energies to The Hilliard Ensemble, of which he was co-founder and musical director. Upcoming recording projects include Stockhausen's Stimmung with Theatre of Voices.

Theatre of Voices is one of America's foremost vocal ensembles, flexible in number, focusing on three main areas of specialty: medieval and Renaissance polyphony, Anglo American folk psalmody (including the Shape Note tradition) and contemporary composers of the 'new tonality' school. The idea for the group was conceived as early as 1989 while Hillier was still artistic director of the Hilliard Ensemble, but looking for ways to expand into different styles of singing while performing the early music of his choice. Theatre of Voices has recorded extensively for harmonia mundi. Their discography includes recordings of Josquin, Mouton, Lassus and Cage. Their highly acclaimed recording of Pärt's De Profundis (HMU907182) was a Billboard Top Ten CD.

In this lively and varied collection, Paul Hillier leads Theatre of Voices and viol consort Fretwork in a selection of settings from The Cries of London. In these fascinating works, the viol consort accompanies, sometimes comically, sometimes poignantly, the raucous voices of 16th-century London's street vendors, mendicants, tradesmen, river-taxis and town criers.

The melodies, rhythm and pulse of daily life in England, at the time of Shakespeare and Elizabeth I are extraordinarily present in works by composers including Gibbons (virginalist to the Prince of Wales and organist at Westminster Abbey) and Weelkes (organist at Winchester Cathedral). Familiar folk tunes such as that of Three Ravens also appear here and dance-based fantasies for the viol consort round out the programme.

Arie antiche' was the title of a collection published by the Italian musicologist and editor Alessandro Parisotti in 1885. All but a handful of the arias on this disc can be found in Parisotti's collection.The main point of interest in the selection is, of course, the music's period. In title and in essence, this is an early-music collection before the term had even been thought of. Each item on this disc is characteristic of its period. It may be said that Parisotti's collections helped bring about a new taste for such music that has only truly flowered in our own time

Drawing upon both the rich liturgical hymnography of the Nativity feast and the carols, this is a unique depiction of the Orthodox Nativity as heard throughout Russia and the Ukraine. This CD includes several first recordings of music by Katalsky, Izvekov and their followers, suppressed during the 20th-century, and which have only recently come to light.

The life and career of Alexander Kastalsky (1856-1926) was particularly tragic.At the end of the 19th-century he was acclaimed as the founder of a new choral style for Russian church music, to be cultivated at a highly unique 'academy' of sacred music under his directorship - the Moscow Synodal School of Church Singing. It was regarded, both in Russia and abroad, as the core of a newly invigorated national art that would give Russian music a distinct identity. Instead, Bolshevik persecution of the Russian Orthodox Church forced the closing of the Moscow School and the disbanding of the world-acclaimed Synodal Choir. Kastalsky's desperate attempts to salvage the institution and the choir on a purely secular foundation also proved futile. Thus, his richly-scored and vibrant choral music has lain forgotten for nearly three quarters of a century.

Even more tragic is the fate of Georgiy Izvekov (1874-1937).After studying and teaching Russian folk music, he became a priest and well-respected composer of liturgical music, an activity he continued until his arrest in 1931 for 'anti-Soviet activities. A second arrest in 1937 resulted in his being executed by firing squad. Izvekov's imaginative and colourful sacred works, based on chant-like motifs and employing the principles of 'choral orchestration' initially developed by Kastalsky, remain practically unknown; his Festive Canon for the Nativity is recorded on this CD for the first time.

In Ukraine, many of the same aspirations spearheaded in Russia by Kastalsky for the creation of a national ecclesiastical music grounded in the folk choral tradition, were harboured by Mykola Leontovych (1877-1921) and Kyrylo Stetsenko (1882-1922), who was also an Orthodox priest. Together with their compatriots Yakiv Yatsynevych (1869-1945) and Vasyl Barvinskyi (1888-1963), they were active as students of musical folklore, collectors and arrangers of folk songs and carols, choral conductors and musical pedagogues. Both Leontovych and Stetsenko died untimely deaths at the ages of 44 and 40, respectively, during the turbulent years following the 1917 revolution; Barvinskyi, though he died at the venerable age of 75, was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment by the Soviet government in 1948.As with Kastalsky and Izvekov, their choral music has remained largely unknown and makes a rare appearance on the present CD.

He is Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir (EPCC), Founder and Director of Theatre of Voices and Chief Conductor of Ars Nova Copenhagen. He co-founded The Hilliard Ensemble and during his tenure as musical director the group rose to international prominence. Hillier enjoys close creative relationships with many living composers, most notably Steve Reich and Arvo Pärt, both of whom have written works for him to perform with his various ensembles.

Not the least enjoyable feature is the convincingly folkish accent with which the Scottish tunes are performed; Pamela Thorby's soulful bends and grace notes are like an echo of the glens, while Rachel Podger's violin playing is as lithe as a fly-fisher's rod. As for Matteis, well, he is no genius, but his music can be fun, and besides, it does not seem to take much to get these players' imaginations going.

After all, the Palladian Ensemble are a group whose quick-witted inventiveness and almost supernatural internal rapport never fail to delight, whatever the music.
