The legendary conductor Václav Talich (1883–1961) who shaped the Czech Philharmonic over the course of entire decades, recorded Dvoøák’s Slavonic Dances in 1955 at what was then Czechoslovak Television. It was his last work with the orchestra.

Václav Talich said of his work: “We conductors are a strange combination of self-confidence and humility. We need self-confidence when we face the orchestra, then humility when we face the composer whose work we are studying

Inspired by Talich’s life, director Martin Suchánek recorded the documentary Václav Talich. Self-confidence and Humility, in which he covers all the significant moments of the conductor’s personal and artistic life

The incomparable Renee Fleming takes on the mantle of Dvo?ak's tragic heroine this month, following her successes with last month's release of Massenet's Manon, also with Opera National de Paris.

Dvorak's operas have always been over-shadowed by his chamber music and orchestral works, above all by his Symphony No. 9, the New World symphony. The fact, however, that he wrote ten operas shows that he was determined also to make a name for himself on the stage, since under Austrian rule the theatre became the cultural focus of the burgeoning Czech national sentiment.

Here the role of the water nymph princess who takes on human form to be united with the mortal Prince she loves, with tragic consequences, forms a suitable vehicle for the celestial Fleming.
