Only a handful of details exist on Francesco Durantes life. He was born in Naples in 1684, little is known of his early years but at a mature age, he worked as a sought after and famous teacher, still in Naples. He died in 1755. His extensive work has had little exposure, but the unconventional and highly individual style of Durante’s music, in its time, attracted both admirers and critics – to the advocates of a simple cantabile style, his works appeared barbaric and cluttered. However, he was also proclaimed as the greatest master of harmony in all Italy. His flamboyant style is particularly evident in these works, recorded here for the first time.
