Belgian music-lovers were overjoyed when, at the 2004 Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition, there were two Belgian prizewinners - and here is their joint debut on CD, courtesy of CYPRÈS. In an enterprising, mostly French, programme, bass Shadi Torbey includes a couple of otherwise unavailable songs, one each by Meyerbeer and de Séverac, while baritone Lionel Lhote tackles two better-known cycles by Poulenc and Ibert. Both have strong, characterful young voices, well caught in an excellent recording
