Music from Spain's "golden age" - The conquest of the Moorish kingdom of Granada marked the fall of the last Spanish Muslim bastion and the ultimate empowerment of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon, the "Catholic Kings". As the Catholic Church grew stronger, so did the Marian cult. It assumed special significance in Granada, where the Virgin Mary was celebrated in particularly lavish festivals. This world premiere recording presents just such a Marian mass. Compiled on the basis of Escobar's important "Misa 4v." and with the aid of a gradual of 1507, it is an attempt to reproduce what a solemn mass might have sounded like at Granada Cathedral in about 1520.
