The music on this disc dates from the time of the Papal Schism, an event that was hardly positive from an ecclesiastical point of view, but would prove to be very important for the development of music. The presence of the Papal chapel on French soil at Avignon, seems to have served as a stimulus for the renewal of the Church’s repertoire. Forsaking the old polyphonies, the lighter rhythms prevalent in France were welcomed with enthusiasm.
