Founded in 1978, the Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet has continually explored the boundaries of the recorder consort. Following its formation, the ensemble's reputation grew quickly and was further strengthened at the 1981 Musica Antigua Competition in Bruges where, challenging the competition rules, it performed an unusual arrangement of a Stevie Wonder song and emerged as the winner. In addition to the classic consort music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the Quartet's repertoire includes many significant twentieth-century works. A number of composers have been inspired to write for the Quartet, which has helped create a new repertoire that proves the instrument to be an important voice of our time.

Whenever I am writing a work, I face the challenge of striking a balance between 'the freedom' and 'the necessity'. The equilibrium between them should not be seen as a static and still element, but as something continuously moving. This point of poise is the living heart of my work. Rather than as a 'physical' place within the work, it can be perceived as the meeting point of freedom and necessity. (...) Fulvio Caldini was born in Arezzo, Italy. He studied piano with Giorgio Sacchetti at the conservatory of music in Florence and graduated in 1982. Subsequently he went on to study harmony and counterpoint with Franco Cioci, chamber music with Franco Rossi (Quartetto Italiano) and John Blakely at King Alfred's college, Winchester, harpsichord with Anna Maria Pernafelli and organ with Fausto D'Antimi.

He was awarded several prizes both as a composer and a pianist in Stresa, Cagliari and Urbino and has been in demand as performer and composer in Europe, North and South America and Japan. From 1987 to 1995 he was the pianist of the Orchestra Regionale Toscana. Fulvio Caldini's compositions and arrangements have been published by Berben, Moeck and Breitkopf & Haertel. He is a teacher of chamber music at the conservatory of Milan.
