Choro is fun. It first appeared in Rio during the late 19th century as a popular style of playing waltzes, tangos and maxixes (ancestor of the samba). The musicians or chorões were as influenced by Afro-Brazilian elements as they were by European models and the choro style quickly developed into a genre of its own attracting the finest musicians and composer / arrangers of the century. In choro, inlike jazz, only one instrument takes the solos while the others provide a rich texture to support the melody. It remains an endlessly fascinating and rewarding resource for Brazilian musicians, always popular despite being periodically out of fashion

Deep in the Brazilian countryside in Pernambuco comes a band of flute and drums whose music is quite unlike other forms of native folklore. The instrumentation and variety of repertoire is unique, with music to celebrate processions and feasts, religious and social events as well as traditional dances

The Modinha is a sentimental art song cultivated in both Portugal and Brazil in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. With the lundu and maxixe it is thought to bo one of the ancestors of the samba, although it seems to inhabit a much more genteel and salon orientated world than the latter. In the nineteenth century composers of modinhas fell under the spell of Italian arias and the songs became more elaborately ornamented. By the end of the century the genre had become old-fashioned and no longer attracted composers. This recording offers a fascinating glimpse of a genteel and European orientated music which has all but vanished from the Brazilian scene

The Northeast of Brazil is an area of great cultural wealth and diversity. Camarão's music - forró, baião, xote, arrastapé - is to be heard on many occasions on television, radio and in dance halls and theatres across the land. His style is direct and appealing, yet he has an extraordinary technical ability and a master of the expressive features of interpretation that make his music swing. Although he has released over twenty discs in his own country this is his first outing on an international label

Frevo is probably the most familiar kind of music from Pernambuco. After the First World War it became popular for parades and carnivals, and carnival time in Recifé is certainly one of the best opportunities to see the gymnastic energy of frevo in full effect. However, frevo is not just about leaping off the street with an umbrella in your hand. Frevo da bloco, music of the blocks or houses, lacks some of the brightness of its brass accompanied cousin frevo da rua, but its heart-breaking ballads and soft laments are equally as explosive

Brassil is a brass quintet composed of talented and enterprising Brazilian musicians intent on practising their art without concessions. The music on this disc has its roots in the regional traditions of Northeastern Brazil and for the most part features the compositions of Jose Urcisino da Silva, better known as "Duda". Duda began his musical career at the age of ten in a brass band in a small town which, despite its size, supported two bands founded in the mid-nineteenth century. He joined the Recife Symphony Orchestra in 1963, but left to take care of his own band which is still going strong. He has written a great deal for the group Brassil, which is an ideal vehicle for his style, based as it is on the brass band tradition

Brassil are remarkable musicians who have succeeded in producing something quite new in more ways than one within the familiar formation of the classicla brass quintet. They come from the northeastern Brazilian state of Paraíba, a region that remains a reservoir of good music and musicians thanks to the enduring traditions of brass bands. It is interesting that most of them had their early training in this tradition and that they play popular music too. This is a quality they share with many players in Brazil; it makes them all-rounders and gives them the essential flexibility to feel at ease in a style that requires the swing of popular forms and the sensitivity of classically trained musicians

"With an utterly fascinating collection of rhythms, melodies (often modal, with lowered seventh and/or fifth) and strange instrumental sounds, we are transported no less closely to the heart of Brazil than we are to that of Mexico by a traditional mariachi band, and with greater variety. Be prepared to forget about main forms and development, and to enjoy music such as has not been heard before from a quintet of 'standard' string instruments, even in the hands of Villa-Lobos ..." - John Duarte, Gramophone
