Visitors to the Palace of Versailles have for many years had their experience of walking around the glorious fountains and small lakes in the gardens enhanced by the production of music of the period played through discreetly placed speakers. This year the sonic concept has been renewed under the supervision of the sound engineer Didier Dal Fitto with the aim of giving each architectural space its own musical sensibility. The actual musical performance for the show has been entrusted to Christophe Rousset, who, at the head of his ensemble Les Talens Lyriques, is a leading light in the interpretation of music from this period. The operas of Lully, Desmarest and Rameau are the sources of the overtures, chaconnes, dances and passacailles which burst forth from each grove, each fountain, bringing their gold and marble statues back to life.

Christophe Rousset has made more than forty recordings as a soloist or chamber musician, and his sets of the harpsichord music of Couperin, Rameau, Forqueray, and J. S. Bach are considered to be benchmark versions. He has also over the years developed a passion for operatic and vocal music as conductor initially with Les Arts Florissants and later with his own ensemble, Les Talens Lyriques.
