With John Johnson, Anthony Holborne, Thomas Robinson, John Daniel and John Dowland, English lute music reached its height. An extensive repertoire has come down to us for solo lute, lute and voice, or two lutes, as in the pieces from Robinson's Schoole of Musicke. Consorts of three, four or five lutes were also used. The existence of manuscript lute books containing transcriptions for a consort of lutes inspired Alpha to revive this practice (for the first time on a CD recording), drawing on the extraordinary repertoire of that time.

The programme includes melancholy pieces, such as Dowland's four-part 'ayre' Now o now and his pavan Lachrimae (using the theme of his earlier song Flow my teares), and mournful songs known as 'dumps'. But there are also brighter songs, fantasies and dances that were very widely known in their day. All these pieces presented a challenge to instrumentalists of the time, who used their artistry and inventiveness to transpose them for string instruments, a practice revived here by the musicians of Le Poème Harmonique.
