The brilliant young Norwegian saxophonist, composer and improviser Rolf-Erik Nystrøm (1975) is a unique talent. He merges an astonishing variety of musical expression from all areas of contemporary music, whilst displaying exceptional technical ability. "Concepts of Sorrows & Dangers" is his solo debut on CD, and represents a personal and spectacular musical journey.

This disc puts the listener directly in touch with the most interesting and approachable part of the Norwegian scene of contemporary music, and includes pieces by many important figures working in this area today.

Rolf Wallin's (1957) background in experimental jazz and rock groups has proved a fruitful compliment to his career as a classical composer. Øyvind Torvund's (1976) music is inspired by his background in free improvising on the guitar. Trond Reinholdtsen (1972) at present works on documentary music and contextualized music. The virtuoso writing of Iannis Xenakis' (1922-2001) has an important influence on contemporary music today. Maja Ratkje (1973) is also well established as performer, mainly in connection with the anarchistic improvisation ensemble SPUNK. Luca Francesconi (1956) studied composition with Stockhausen and Berio and Tracce is a multi-layered solo piece for saxophone solo. Lars Petter Hagen (1975) works with instrumental and electroacoustic music as well as sound installations and music for stage and film. Rolf-Erik Nystrøm completes this collection with four improvised self-portraits. Here he takes saxophone playing beyond all known limits, and re-defines the instrument and its possibilities.
